From a family of artists, a grandmother who was a photographer and painter, and a mother who was a photographer and poet, Barbara de Jonghe naturally took up an artistic path. She studied drawing and painting at the Academy of Brussels, to enter the world of the art market. Art adviser on an international scale for a family of collectors, she evolved among Impressionist, Modern and contemporary works of art. Enriched by this experience, she very quickly felt a pressing need to create, and, returning to her basics, she embarked on photography. Her art reflects an alliance between sources of inspiration and affirmation of her own style, between influences and her own personal signature.
Her creative universe offers questions about abstraction and femininity through a palette of techniques that she explores with pleasure and curiosity.
Demanding, elegant, questioning, introspection, humour: this quintet of terms expresses the vibrant core of her works, the focus of the artist's imagination. Based on a serial protocol, Barbara de Jonghe's aesthetics blurs the boundary between so-called objective photography and the subjective photography founded by Otto Steinert.
With subjective photography, which comes in very diverse forms, from Otto Steinert to Wolfgang Tilmans, she shares the vision of an art that experiments with the poetics of the image. A Manifesto of Chromaticism, of purity of form, of the imprint of Pop Art, Barbara de Jonghe's works are part of the current movement in photography.
